Mountain flora of Northern Greece
A field-oriented overview of the varied upland habitats north of Thessaly, linking major massifs with practical ways to read their vegetation.
Range
Many mountains, many substrates
Northern Greece brings limestone, siliceous and ultramafic ground into close geographic range. That geological variety, combined with large changes in altitude and exposure, helps explain why plant communities can shift sharply between neighbouring massifs.
Field pattern
Read the slope from forest to summit
Start below the treeline and note which woody species dominate, then follow the change through open grassland, scree, rock ledges and late-lying snow patches. Aspect and wind exposure often matter as much as elevation.
Route
Build a comparison across massifs
Use Olympus, Tymfi, Smolikas, Pangeo, Falakro, Vermio and Kaimaktsalan as separate field chapters. Record habitat before species name so observations remain useful when identification is uncertain.
