Large cliffs hold small refuges

The most imposing landforms contain fine-scale differences in shade, seepage and soil pockets. A plant record should identify the ledge or crevice habitat, not simply the cliff.

Stability matters

Loose slopes, fixed stone and turf-covered scree look similar from a distance but support different rooting strategies. Note whether the surface moves underfoot.

Identification

Cushion plants need close structure

For spiny cushions and small violets, include leaves, old stems and any fruit. Overall shape is useful, but diagnostic details sit close to the ground.
